amazing wooden bike designs

Wood may not seem like the best material for a bicycle, but considering how energy-intensive it is to process metals, wooden bikes seem like a more reasonably earth-friendly alternative, and may even be a better ride. Though we've seen no shortage of stylish wooden bikes, this sculptural beauty by Yojiro Oshima, a design student at Tokyo's Musashino Art University, is quite the head-turner.

To explore the possibilities and structural strengths of a different type of frame in his degree thesis, Oshima's handmade prototype utilizes a "Y-foil" type of structure, where the seat cantilevers out for a softer ride. Oshima says on theBicycle Design blog that

This proposal is about the shape of the frame and the handle mainly which doesn't concern what material it's made out of. The maximum comfort can be put into practice by wood.

Indeed, there's a lot of interesting curves and swoops in the frame, plus those awesome sculptural armrests. To lighten the bike's weight, parts of the wooden frame have been left hollow, and Oshima made this all by hand, rather than CNC machining it:
It is all hand made. The down tube and seat tube are hollowed with plenty of thickness left not to disturb the surface when planed too much. As a result, it weights about 14kg in total. The thickness is uncertain though, I guess it's about 6-12mm. It is bonded the half and half into one.

To increase the cushioning on the wheels, Oshima used "baton" style wheels, which feature extra arcs to the rim. Prototype or not, it's certainly an elegant reinterpretation of the standard bike frame that we hope to see further developed.

Beautiful mountain bike design

Beautiful mountain bike design features wood frame, built-in energy generator

© Pietro Russomanno via Yanko Design
Designer Pietro Russomanno has come up with an interesting concept for a mountain bike.
Yanko Design notes, "The mainframe skeleton is crafted from plywood with inert rubber gaskets sandwiched in for effect. The cycle features an innovative ‘Easy Saddle’ system that allows the rider to change the height of the seat by just pushing a button."
Another interesting feature is that the front wheel has a dynamo built in to provide energy to a smart phone dock on the handlebars so you can keep your phone charged as you ride. It also provides speed and distance info to the dock, if needed for tracking your ride stats.
The design may be more eye-candy than novel, or even practical. But who doesn't love wonderful wooden bike eye-candy??

finally rolls out to market..." Sandwichbike " (grab from the web)

Inspired by IKEA, the Sandwich Bike comes flat packed in a cardboard box. Two wooden plate sides are secured through four identical ‘smart cylinders’, which house the cranks and such forth. The weld-less frame and components all assemble with a single tool. This is designed to reduce transport and construction costs, with the intention of more bikes for more people. Simply gorgeous.

Upon its first introduction the mostly wood, flat-packable bicycle generated quite a bit of buzz, with email and phone inquiries going to the agency on a weekly basis ever since—but it was strictly an after-hours side project taken on by some of the agency's lead designers. So, just a few short months ago, an autonomous side company was established to bring Sandwichbike to market. Powered by a passion for their product, Sandwichbike designer and engineer Ite Kingma neatly sums it up: "If you want to create something you should create with full belief and full quality."

As we understand it, their idea is to craft a bike twice as cheap as standard models. This will allow the purchaser to basically buy two for the price of one. He/She keeps one, while another can be shipped to developing countries to provide much needed transport, such as enabling rural kids to cover long distances to school. Their vision being that a donation of mobility, unlike money, will not be subject to corruption.
