MañosaDEFINING and expressing Filipino culture has been the aspiration of National Artist Francisco “Bobby” Mañosa throughout his career. In his personal career as an architect spanning more than 50 years, he has made it his crusade to uphold Philippine architecture in his designs.

Mañosa’s efforts were finally recognized when he was named National Artist—or so he thought. His selection as a National Artist, together with theater artist Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, fashion designer Jose “Pitoy” Moreno, including renowned film director Carlo J. Caparas, drew uproar from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The legality of President Macapagal-Arroyo’s selection of these new national artists is now pending resolution before the Supreme Court.

True to his words

Believing that his own culture should not take a back seat to foreign architecture, Mañosa dug deeper and discovered that Filipino architecture is “richer than the architecture of many, many other countries.” For more than five decades, Mañosa has actively endorsed Philippine architecture after seeing Filipinos become more interested in foreign architecture.

“I was so touched by all the distinct architectures of the world that I convinced myself on pursuing this Filipino architecture,” Mañosa told the Varsitarian. “To do Filipino, I must know my country; and I have to believe in what my country can offer.”

Due to globalization, people’s preferences for architectural designs have been homogenized with what are more popular, like the Swiss chalet, Balinese house, French chateau, or the Mediterranean villa. But Mañosa refused to join the bandwagon, fighting for his Philippine culture-inspired designs.

“When clients do not accept my proposal to use Philippine culture-inspired designs, I turn them down,” Mañosa said.

Architecture, for him, is not about the tedious imitation of others’ work, but about imagination and innovation.

“This process of creation must strive to express who we are and define our unique place in this world,” said Mañosa, who was named by Asiaweek magazine as “One of the Seven Visionary Architects of Asia” in 1982.

Mañosa’s over -half-a-century-of-design experience has been a consistent search and development of Philippine architecture, in both its traditional and modern aspects. He even integrated technology with indigenous materials to make them cheaper, doable, and durable, as depicted in his famous masterpieces, like the Tahanang Pilipino (known today as the Coconut Palace) that showcases the versatility of coconut tree derivatives and bamboo as construction materials. This octagon-shaped palace has a roof fashioned after the traditional salakot. It has a 101-coconut shell chandelier and pineapple fiber bed covers in its suites. The palace has been a guesthouse for personalities, such as Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi, and Hollywood actors Brooke Shields and George Hamilton.

The dynamism of Mañosa’s crafts involves the application of contemporary Filipino tropical design suited for climate and culture.

Another renowned architecture feat of Mañosa is the Pearl Farm resort in Davao, which transformed the lowly fisherman’s house into a magnificent architecture. Located in a secluded cove off Davao City, this 11-hectare world class resort is surrounded by swaying coconut palms and a glittering white-sand beach.

Once a pearl farm, where thousands of white-lipped oysters from Sulu Sea were cultivated for their pink, white and gold pearls, the resort now promises a retreat surrounded by ethnic motifs reflecting the rich culture of indigenous Samal tribe of Sulu.

The resort’s houses are patterned after the stilt houses of this seafaring tribes. Structures are made of bamboo, wood, rope, stone and coral—to blend with the surrounding landscape and crystal-clear waters.

Mañosa also designed the six-star Amanpulo Resort in Palawan, which was added to Indonesian hotelier Adrian Zecha’s ultra luxury chain of Aman resorts. It is contemporary, elegant and understated, but distinctly Filipino. This ultimate tropical getaway is located in Pamalican Island.

Amanpulo offers a culture-inspired accommodation. Its Casitas, or cottages, are modeled after the authentic Philippine bahay kubo, with paying homage to the country’s rich natural resources, like pebble-washed walls, coconut-shell tables, rustic Palawan rice and knife baskets, and beds with a rattan headboard.

Amanpulo has reaped numerous awards, like the Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards and the Best Beach Resort Worldwide by United Kingdom-based Gallivanter’s Awards for Excellence.

“Our task was to interpret the resort owners’ vision into a great design,” Mañosa said.

Other Filipino architects may have designed grander and more striking edifices, but no one has been as articulate in his poetics as Mañosa. Nor as adamant. True to his words, Mañosa incorporated the Filipino touch in all his works from the floor plan to the structural design, to the embellishments and even in the pieces of furniture.

Mañosa is indeed a world-class architect, citing highly praised establishments he designed. These include the Banaue Rice Terraces-inspired San Miguel building in Mandaluyong, the Ateneo Professional School in Rockwell, and the famous Shrine of Mary Queen of Peace (Edsa Shrine), among others.

Fruitful harvests

Emerging as a Philippine icon in architecture, Mañosa received several awards both from local and international civic and religious organizations. Among them is the Papal Knighthood of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1979 at the Vatican City.

Other awards that he has received are the Golden Award in Filipino Architecture from the United Architects of the Philippines, and the distinction of being Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) architect, which allows him to practice his profession anywhere in Asia and the United States.

An APEC architect facilitates the mobility of architects for architectural services throughout the Asia-Pacific region by reducing current barriers to the export of professional services.

To be an APEC architect, applicants should: have received an undergraduate degree in Architecture, have a post-graduate degree with at least seven years of practical experience, and at least two years of professional practice as a registered or licensed architect.

Aside from espousing Filipino-inspired designs, Mañosa also lectures in various Philippine schools and universities to spread the gospel of Filipino architecture.

“There are many architectural schools in the country that produce thousands of graduates per year,” said Mañosa. “It’s about time that we teach Filipino architecture in all these schools.”

Mañosa has also written a book on Filipino culture, titled Designing Filipino: The Architecture of Francisco T. Mañosa, which was released in 2002. Copies were donated to the libraries of architectural schools throughout the country.

Through Mañosa’s crusade, Filipino architecture is evolving for the best and reclaiming its rightful place in the global scene.

“I am a Filipino and I love my country so I must help it,” said Mañosa. “But it is not a one-man’s job so you and I must invent and exercise our culture into design.”

Mañosa’s pursuit of Filipino design can be traced to his college days at the old College of Architecture and Fine Arts where he met National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin.

Mañosa originally wanted to study music. However, his father, former Faculty of Engineering dean Manuel Mañosa, prompted him to take up architecture. Thanks to Mañosa’s father, the Philippine architecture is reaping the benefits of Mañosa’s contributions.

National Artist in limbo

With his achievements, Mañosa appears to be a lock for a recognition as a Nationl Artist. However, this recognition will have to wait.

Concerned Artists of the Philippines, chaired by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera, claims that the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts already submitted a final list of nominees which did not include Guidote-Alvarez, Moreno, Caparas, and Mañosa. However, President Macapagal-Arroyo appointed Guidote-Alvarez, Moreno, Caparas and Mañosa despite their exclusion from the list. The group alleged that only names appearing in the list are eligible to be appointed as national artists.

UST College of Architecture dean John Joseph Fernandez disagreed with the Concerned Artists of the Philippines’ stand, explaining that adding nominees is normal and has been done many times in the past.

“When the Cultural Center of the Philippines and National Commission for Culture and the Arts submitted the list of nominees for this year, there was no nominee in architecture so Malacañang asked the Professional Regulations Commission to give a nominee for architecture, and came up with his [Mañosa] name,” Fernandez said. Mañosa said he does not expect any recognition; only respect for his works.

All that he received was a letter of declaration from the Malacañang Palace.

“He (Mañosa) deserves the recognition and the people’s respect, especially. It is sad that such controversy has been raised,” Fernandez said. “He has contributed a lot in designing Filipino.” Tomasino

He is famous for his unconventional and distinctly Filipino designs. His exceptional architecture transformed the native bahay-kubo from a house associated with trivial rural folk, to an edifice depicting the nation’s unique ancestry and culture.

An Architecture graduate of the old UST College of Architecture and Fine Arts in 1953, Francisco or Bobby Mañosa is the genius behind the historic Edsa Shrine, the Coconut Palace, and the Metro-Rail Transit.

To give tribute to the man who redefined the bahay-kubo, the Varsitarian interviewed him in his cozy, native-inspired office in Pasig City.

Childlike enthusiasm

For Bobby, architecture is more than a lucrative enterprise, it is a craft and a life. Young architects aspire to become like him. But in spite of his almost legendary status, Bobby remains childlike in his enthusiasm towards his work.

“I love this work because it’s fun!” he said. Being in the business for quite sometime, his work still remains as thrilling and fresh as it was before. Every project is like a new piece of artwork, unique, and fascinating.

When it comes to conceptualizing and planning projects, Bobby compares himself to a painter. For him, before any stroke of brush, an artist must have already conceived the masterpiece in his mind. Before a single line is drawn, a structure is created.

Laughingly, he recalled how frustrated his father was over his indecisiveness. Originally , Bobby wanted to become a musician and a painter. But like most high school students, Bobby was uncertain of what course to take up in college. He thought of taking up painting or violin. Until finally his father suggested architecture. “It’s still artistic and creative. So I took it,” he said.

Indeed, Bobby’s father played a big role not only in his choice of career, but also in his nationalistic ideals. A sanitary engineer of the Metropolitan Water District, his father instilled in him and his brothers a deep love for country, a love that he himself is now imparting to his own children.

Following in his footsteps, his son Angelo also pursued architecture. “Like all the great architects who has a son in their office, I also have a son to take over someday.” But Bobby still has no plans of retiring. Nevertheless, it’s a great comfort to him that his son will be there to continue what he has started.

Vision to actualization

The famous Amanpulo Resort in Palawan manifests Mañosa’s unique brand of architecture—it utilizes local lumber, pawid, sawali, and kugon.

For him, Filipinos should utilize the bountiful gifts that nature provides.

Moreover, Bobby looks up to American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, a proponent of organic architecture and the Earth style.

That’s why in his work, Mañosa follows a three-A formula: awareness of the materials available to us; acceptance of these materials; and assimilation of these materials in our lifestyle.

His work attitude is really incredible. “Sometimes I even forget to eat on time,” Mañosa said.

He also travels all over the country to oversee sites for potential projects which makes him forget time. He said that whenever he is in the office, he rarely sits down. He goes from room to room, consulting with the 38 other architects of the firm.

From scrap to landmark

During the colonial period, it was the westerners who dictated architectural trends and designs. The Spanish period saw the distinct design of the bahay-na-bato or the Antillean houses. When the Americans came, the architectural designs shifted to the Mediterranean mode and art deco design. Along with these changes, the native bahay-kubo lost its luster, and with it, the Filipinos’ cultural identity.

Many people today consider the bahay-kubo a dwelling place of the poor. Those belonging to the upper bracket of society consider it outdated or backward, belonging to the farms and to remote provinces.

Everyone dreams of owning a house like the French Chateau or the Swiss and Mediterranean Homes—all Western.

In the West, “the functions of the house follow its shape.” But to Bobby, Philippine architectural form follows fashion, not function. Filipinos, according to him, are copycats. The loss of Filipinos’ identity as a nation is among the many concerns of Bobby. And bringing back the bahay-kubo is his way of helping the country regain its pride and culture.

“My vision, my sentiments, serve as a wake-up call for everyone, a call for awareness,” he said. With this philosophy, Bobby involves himself in many housing projects with the government to improve the lives of the poor. He was also responsible for restoring countless old churches and historical landmarks like the Las Piñas Bamboo Church and the Malinta Tunnel in Corregidor.

Experimenting on a variety of native materials, Bobby uses coconut, cogon, wood, stone, clay, rattan, and even banana leaves. This can be observed in his well-known designs like the Coconut Palace, Banana House, Bamboo House, and the San Miguel Corp. Bldg. in Pasig. These majestic works gave him countless awards: “Most Outstanding Las Pinero,” Award in Architectural Design from Perpetual Help College of Rizal (1996); “Kalakbay” Special Award given by the Department of Tourism (1994) for his outstanding contribution in the promotion and development of Philippine tourism; “Golden Award in the Field of Architecture” (1989); and “Architect of the Year Award” from the Manila Comission in Arts and Culture (1982).”

When Pope John Paul II visited the Philippines in 1982, Bobby was commissioned to design the altar and the Papal chair in Luneta. The bahay-kubo inspired concept pleased the Pope that he was later knighted as “Noble Knight of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great.” He considers this his greatest honor. Apparently his father received the same award 34 years earlier, from Pope Pius XII.

Culture, modernity, and globalization

Bobby is firm in his conviction that the country should retain its cultural individuality especially in architecture—no matter how “hi-tech” the world might get.

The world teems with diverse cultures and unique architectural styles, which makes Mañosa worried of the Philippine architecture’s capability to be global. And, in order to promote Filipino culture globally, he designs Filipino-styled houses in Sydney, Malaysia, and even in the Caribbean.

“Architects must also design based on climactic conditions,” according to Bobby. For him, imitation of Western architecture doesn’t make sense when their design is obviously not fit for the climate in the Philippines. The glass-buildings in Makati for example, are suitable for colder places where people do not have to use venetian blinds to block sunlight from seeping through their workplaces.

When it comes to technology, Bobby believes that, “When you buy technology, you buy culture.” According to him, technology should complement and not dictate our lifestyle. It should be tamed to produce the materials that can become Filipino. Together with a man named Medilen Singh, Mañosa was able to smoothen the rough contours of the bamboo pole into a smooth, ply-wood-like floor panel.

At first glance, Bobby’s designs may appear flamboyant and eccentric, but these contain the modern conveniences of technology. In his own distinct way, he was able to blend practicality with aesthetics through the materials he uses.

“My philosophy is to bring back the bahay-kubo and this philosophy will be in continuity,” Mañosa said.

At the moment, his firm is working on a project which will be a hospital twice the size of Makati Medical Center. Of course, the project will still be in line with his bahay-kubo concept. Sometimes, he even turns down clients who commission him to do Western styles.

Working longer

“I have not reached the end. I am just beginning in my practice. I wish I could have 100 more years to learn.” Today, Bobby remains a pervasive figure in the Filipino architectural world. When asked what work is he most proud of, he said he has none because he believes in giving his best to each of his projects.

Incidentally, his firm will be launching “Designing Filipino”, a book on Architecture, this August. Having great hopes for this project, Bobby said the book will contain philosophies and ideals his firm upholds. “This book will someday become a bible for architecture students.”

Edible landscapes and steadfast visions

“Bahay-kubo, kahit munti, ang halaman doon ay sari-sari..” Bobby sang these words unabashedly when the conversation shifted to landscapes.

For Mañosa, Filipinism extends to the landscape as well. Again, landscaping should focus on whatever is abundant. Being a tropical country, the Philippines is agri-oriented, Mañosa pointed out. It is not suitable to dream of British and California gardens. Our natural plants possess an exotic and wild beauty that depicts the tropical climate of the country, he said.

Mañosa also emphasized the practicality of planting edible plants in the Filipino backyard. Aside from making the landscape beautiful, plants like the Papaya and Banana can be consumed.

Towards the end of the interview, Bobby disclosed an important philosophy that has served as a driving factor behind his work. “Architecture must be true to itself, its land, and its people.” Many of his colleagues think that what Bobby is doing is wonderful. Some of them are starting to believe in what he has started. But up to now, many are still close-minded and skeptical about the importance of the bahay-kubo.

But in time, acceptance will follow. It takes great courage and guts to go against the dictates of society. What Mañosa has done is remarkable. He started alone as a rebel in a seemingly lost cause. Only an unwavering pride and a deep-seated love for his country kept him going and brought him to where he is right now.

Difference Between Civil engineering and Architecture

You may already have an idea on the process of designing and the construction of buildings, mansions, and other edifice; and you know for a fact that the job requires professionals like Architects and Civil Engineers.

It is very likely that your idea of their work is vague. Maybe when you think of architects, you would only visualize a person making drawings on large sheets of paper and when you think of civil engineers, you imagine someone with a hardhat analyzing on the field of construction, yelling instructions to workers involved in the assembly. If you were thinking along these lines, though stereotypical, you are to some extent accurate.

However, there are marked differences between the fields of architecture and civil engineering. In fact, the two practices have well-defined responsibilities that make them distinct from each other.

Architecture is mainly a practice of designing structures with aesthetics and spatial functionality in mind. Architects may have the basic to advanced knowledge of structural mechanics but their primary focus is always, first and foremost, the creativity, look and feel, and functionality of the design. Structural vision starts in the field of architecture.

Civil engineering, also referred as structural engineering, specializes in the structural elements of systems, ensuring that facilities can withstand normal and extreme loading conditions. Civil engineers work closely with architects and they are responsible for making the vision of architects into a realization. Civil engineering deliberates on the physics involved in the construction process of the architect’s design.

Civil engineering may also tackle the particulars of design but the practice is often not concerned with the aesthetics and intended function of structures. Civil Engineers will rather focus on innovative ways to make the design work. When they see something in the design as impractical, they can suggest a design modification from the ones involved in the architectural department.

A good engineer-architect relationship is vital to have a more efficient, high quality project result.

A good civil engineer will always give the best efforts to make the design into a reality. A good architect, on the other hand, will always consider the practicality of the design so it can be built with less cost and at a faster rate. They may overlap each other’s work but in the ideal world, each has its own expertise to be esteemed.

Summary:

1. Architecture is more into the creativity of designs. Civil engineering focus on innovation to realize that design.
2. Architecture involves the design of structures with the focus on aesthetics and functionality. Civil engineering will not normally care about those things; Civil Engineers will rather deliberate and plan the methodology to construct the design.
3. Architecture initiates the project through architects’ drafts. Civil engineering involves studying drafts and examining the practicality of the design; civil engineers ensure that the design can withstand normal and extreme loading conditions.
4. Architects will need engineers help to make their designs work. Civil engineers will be guided by the architectsÂ’ outlines and dimensions.

Horizons Lost and Found: Architectural adventures on the heritage isle of Bohol

Most tourists to the island of Bohol normally go for its natural and aquatic attractions. Snorkelling, diving, and hiking are the must-dos, while the Chocolate Hills, dolphins, whales, corals, and tarsiers are the must-sees. However, Bohol is also fertile ground for the equally rewarding and no less strenuous sport of heritage-hunting. In this adventure, the quarry might be a bit easier to track down but are just as endangered. Species range in size from the petite urnas to gigantic cathedrals, and in age from Baclayon church, one of the oldest in the country, to the freshly-weaved buri and bamboo baskets of Antequera.

Making your way around the province, one can embark on a fascinating journey through the evolution of Philippine art, architecture, construction and design. The wealth of prospective prey can be bewildering. Fortunately, the NCCA has published two very important field guides for the budding heritage hunter. There is Visita Iglesia, Regalado Trota Jose's painstakingly comprehensive guide to Bohol's churches, and Tubod, the Heart of Bohol, a book embracing the entirety of Bohol's cultural legacy. We also managed to ask Instituto Cervantes director, Dr. Javier Galvan, an architect by profession and ardent heritage conservationist, to lend some enlightening post-hunt commentary.



Panglao Watchtower
Not far from the tropical playground of Alona beach, right in front of "the biggest plaza in the province of Bohol", stands the imposingly solid Panglao Church, and a few paces towards the seafront rises Bohol's tallest stone watchtower. Dr. Galvan finds the hexagonal tower of Panglao particularly interesting because of its curved sillhouette, reminiscent of chinese pagodas. "The angle of each section is different, it changes, leaning more and more inward, thus creating a curve out of straight lines. It shows how careful the construction was, that the people who made this building have aesthetical values that were quite elaborate for the time and place," he rambles disarmingly in his trademark tongue of Archi-Spanglish (here translated).

Journeying onward, past the previously featured Cloribel house, just before we cross the causeway to Tagbilaran, is the town of Dauis. Its church is one of the fanciest and most Gothic in the province, the project of an ambitious Recollect parish priest who also had the adjacent bridge constructed. In contrast to the suggestively Oriental Panglao tower, the tower of Dauis has a cantilevered roof with wooden trusses more evocative of buildings in Medieval Europe. "They are on the same island, very close but they are very different," notes Dr. Galvan.

At Dauis is also where we first encountered the alarming impact of every heritage hunter's nemeses, the dastardly architectural salvagers, and their crooked comrades the relic thieves. The church was closed to the public as protection against these nefarious elements. Unfazed, we were still able to sneak into the back and catch a glimpse of the guarded treasures. Dr. Galvan grieves for the many santos and artistic artifacts that have been removed or stolen. "You can find more santos in the antique stores of Malate than in the churches. It's understandable how they need to close them because it's an unavoidable necessity in these modern times to keep the antiques and relics out of reach from people who may steal them. But it's a pity because the church is something that belongs to a community."



Vandalized Statue
Antique dealers have shamelessly plundered Bohol for years. From its venerable churches and houses have come countless holy images and icons, hardwood furniture, and the ornately carved and gilded urnas, miniaturized altars unique to Bohol. The island's rich trove of treasures may have been remarkably spared from the devastation brought about by war and natural calamities, but greed and apathy is now threatening to keep them from being properly exhibited for all to rightfully admire. However, it is not just these portable objets d'art that are in danger of disappearing from view. Even its enduring monuments are not safe from destructive hands. Ironically, the curious history of Bohol's churches may be partly to blame.



Dauis Church
"An interesting feature that you only see in Bohol are these porticos that were added to the original churches by the Recollects after the Jesuits were expelled from all the territories of the Spanish crown," Dr. Galvan explains, "Most Filipino churches did not have a portico, so as you cross the main gate you come under the hot sun orpouring rain. I think it's very clever to have a portico in the Philippines because of the weather."

What has happened is that recently in many old structures they have built modern canopies or concrete awnings that seriously hamper the view of the facade at the very least, and completely ruin the original architecture at the very worst.

"In the beginning, the buildings were made by artisans who knew how to cut the stone. But these construction skills have been lost by society. With the arrival of concrete and steel, there came a particular moment in the 20th century when there was a divorce. All these skilled people, carpenters, fandejos, and guilders, were lost," mourns Dr. Galvan. "The alterations are normally done in very bad taste because they are made by people who are not professional. They don't have the sensitivity, the feel for how architecture was before. So the results in most cases are terrible."

But Dr. Galvan does not rule out renovation work altogether. "I agree that it is necessary because a building in use is a living organism. You cannot freeze it and put it in a box. But restoration is a discipline, you need trained and skilled people. Not just anyone can do it. You can't hire a contractor who only knows how to work with concrete and has never even heard about lime mortar which is fundamental for this work. You cannot put concrete on old stones, the pressure will destroy them. It is necessary to stop these people before they try to do any renovation work."

With every church and tower we encounter, we hear about yet another forgotten craft secret and unveil even more lost building skills. Scrutinising these mighty edifices, one has to admire their methodical construction, the details of which we can only speculate on. As far as we know, pillars of hard molave wood formed the framework around which the stones were laid. To produce the mortar, known as la mezcla (the mix), that held the stones together, lime from powdered coral and seashells were mixed with beach sand washed of its salt. And then a secret ingredient (different in every region) was added to fortify the mix. In Bohol, tradition states that egg whites and molasses were used. Glass was expensive at the time so for most windows, translucent squares were cut from the shells of lampiro clams, or what we call capiz. Aside from their age, the care and detail that went into these structures should be enough to ensure their continued preservation, but that does not always hold true.

"There are many cases where there are people who have destroyed structures because they have thought that it is old and they want something new. You destroy a monument, something that has lasted centuries, to construct a new building without any character, absolutely similar to any building anywhere with no connection to Filipino history. That is a pity," Dr. Galvan sighs.

And yet Bohol has fared better than most regions in the Philippines. Neglected in favor of more populous and popular provinces for decades, Bohol's natural and cultural resources have managed to escape the blight brought by industrialization. The grandeur of their surviving heritage structures is where the humble Boholanos have an edge over their haughtier neighbors. "In Tagbilaran, the Presidencia is one of the very few civil buildings standing from the Spanish period, and that's quite outstanding," agrees Dr. Galvan. "There is awareness. The community has a sense of heritage, of the value of old things. Also, Bohol has a comprehensive inventory of its monuments, which other provinces lack. So the role Bohol might play for illustrative purposes, as a model for other provinces, is very important."

For now, with a dutiful community on watch, Bohol's great stone ladies stand safe, their painted ceilings and tiled floors welcoming parishioners every Sunday, their carved facades, colorful gardens, and varied configurations captivating all who pass by. Like the whales swimming through the waters off Pamilacan, these beautiful behemoths glide gracefully through time, seemingly aloof from the problems plaguing their precarious existence. But if the whalers of Bohol were able to abandon their centuries-old hunting traditions and serve as stewards of the sea, then we can hope that it will be much easier to encourage more Filipinos to become protectors of our patrimony. So fellow hunter, think twice before buying that next rebulto. The past that you save is your very own.

Introduction

The fact there is not, and never has been a characteristically Philippine Architecture is not necessarily a reflection upon the genius of the Filipinos. There are many critics who contend with some degree of justification, that America has no distinct architecture and who accuse American architects of plagiarizing the ancient Greek, Roman and renaissance architectural forms.

The Greeks and the Romans borrowed the principle of the column and the lintel from the Egyptians, who first utilized it on an extensive architectural scale, and the Gothic architects borrowed the principle of the arch from the Romans, so it is evident that progress in architecture has not been made by the repudiation of early architectural discoveries but rather by the development and amplification of them.

The Philippines may go through a long period in which the adaptation of European and American science and technology shall be accomplished before the field or original research is reached and so in architecture - they must proceed far with he adaptation of foreign architectural styles and methods of construction before a distinctly characteristic Philippine style will appear. To evolve a new style, it is necessary to consider our cultural heritage and legitimate utilization of exotic architectural motives practically modified to conform to the customs of commercial and private life and to the existence of tropical heat and torrential rains.

Geography, religion, and time were responsible for the admixture of our ancient culture. Originally a part of the great continent of Asia, the Philippines became an archipelago of 7,100 islands after the post glacial period. Strategically located, it lies along the borders of the West Pacific and the South China Sea. Before the 16th century, it was an archipelago of independent kingdoms, intermittently invaded by Negritos, Indonesians, Proto-Malays, Malays and swept by the tide of the Southeast Asian Empires - the Shri-Vishaya, the Madjapahit, the Mohammedan-Malay Empire of Malacca, and the Chinese of the Mings.

Architecture is determined by various factors - the climate, the contour of the land, the materials at hand, religion, social, political and economic conditions, scientific and technological advancement. Simplifying, architecture is determined by the needs of the people in their time, the materials at hand and their aesthetic tastes.
Environmental Influences
Geography and Topography

Originally a part of the great Asiatic mainland, the Philippines became an archipelago of 7,110 islands and islets after the post glacial period. Some geologists asserted that the Philippines was of volcanic origin. The eruptions of sea volcanoes in remote times caused the emergence of the islands above the waters, and in this way the Philippines was born. Geographical scientists opined that the Philippines was a remnant of a vast continent in the Pacific which in prehistoric times, sank beneath the water like the fabled Atlantis. This lost Pacific continent was known as Mu or Lemuria, and its remnants included aside from the Philippines, Borneo, Celebes, the Malaccas, Java, Sumatra, the Carolines, Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti and other islands in the Pacific.

The most popularly accepted theory that the Philippines was once a part of Asia. During the post glacial period, the world's ice melted causing the level of the sun to rise; consequently, the lower region of the earth including the land bridges connecting Asia and the Philippines submerged, thus it came to pass that th Philippine was separated from Asia. This theory is supported by the following: (1) There is similarity of flora and fauna in Asia and the Philippines; (2) Similarity in their rock structures; (3) The existence of shallow water between the Philippines and Asia; (4) Presence of fore-deep at the eastern margin of the Philippines indicating that the archipelago was the edge of a continental platform projecting eastwardly from Asia.

The Philippine archipelago extends about 1152 miles along the North-South latitude and 688 miles along the West-East longitude. It is 75 miles south of Taiwan and 34 miles from North Borneo.
Geology and Materials

The Philippines is rich in latent wealth found in her vast lands of valleys, plains, hills and mountain ranges and the waters along her extensive coastlines. There is a great variety of timber, mineral land areas. Iron, copper, gold, tin, clay, limestones, manganese are mined in many parts of the country. The best timber products used for building and furniture making are narra, molave, yakal, dao, ipil, guijo, tanguile, palosapis and others found in extensive mountain ranges and hills. Palm and rattan are also abound. These are used form minor light construction.
Religion

The first Indonesians and Malays who came to the Philippines were animo-deists and therefore worshipped the sun as the source of life, the moon, the stars, the rainbow, the caves, volcanoes and large trees. They also respected certain animals like the sharks, crows, doves, rooster, lizards and iguanas. They invoked protection from evil from their ancestral spirits and in the concept of anitos and diwatas. these beliefs took form in the decorative symbols that they carved in their houses, sailboats, tools, weapons and costumes. The carcass of the carabao skull was also important symbol placed on top of the roof of the chief's house to signify that the community had a leader. The rooster was the symbol of the sun, force, courage, and fertility and was used on top of the roof finials as well as in the praws of sailboats. The lizard or iguana was used as a symbol of the reincarnation of a deity and they were carved and placed across the doors of th granaries to ward off the entrance of pests and thieves.

The second and third waves of Malays brought the concept of Bathala, the supreme god, creator of the universe and lord of all man.

Spanish domination which lasted from 1565 to 1989 brought about distinct changes in religious life and practices of the people. Christianity elevated the social position of women and its fundamental concern is the salvation of the soul for eternal life. Mohammedanism had a strong foothold in the southern islands. Other religions have been adapted by some minorities. All of these religions provided men set of ideals which carry them beyond their own immediate sphere. The various religions have developed different social principles. These ideals and principles are reflected in the different religious and sepulchral structures, - the church, the tombs and burial mounds.
Climate and Seismic Condition

Climate, topography and seismic conditions dictate a highly functional type of architecture. Torrential rains, typhoon, tidal waves, heat, humidity, earthquake are common occurrences in the Philippines. The main seasons in the Philippines are the dry-hot season from March to June; rainy-wet season from July to November. December to February experience mild climate. Torrential rains cause floods, washing out coastal towns and destroying forest and farmlands.
Social, Political and Economic Conditions

Before the coming of the Spaniards, the primitive non-Christian Filipinos lived in small communities called barangay ruled by a datu. They were ruled by local laws. the oldest source of law, it was believed, was the goddess "Lubluban". The laws were announced by village informer who went around the village at night to make announcements. The laws carried many subjects such as marriage, inheritance, loans, contracts, and descents. The Code of Kalantiaw and the Code of Maragtas were the oldest laws. They believed in auguries and superstitions. They had a system of alphabet based on the ancient Malayan alphabet. They had a system of writing using the bamboo pulp or the bark of a tree for writing. They practised medicine using herbs, juices and oil. They showed skill in the art of embalming. The tinuro, the dipa and the dankal were used as units of linear measure. the gatang was the unit of measure of capacity. The people mined and smelted their own iron ore and copper. They made beads, armlets and earrings. They established trade relations with China, siam, Cambodia, Annam, India and Japan.

The art of the Bagobos were confined to personal adornments of headgear, belts, armlets, sheaths and pouches. The maranaw craftsmanship and dexterity are evident in their brass work, the urns, rays and "gadurs" (vases). Among the Ifugaos, woodcarving in wooden representation of deities and idols was a common art. The Apayaos, Kalingas and Gaddangs practised dry-rice agriculture. The Mangyans subsisted on shifting agriculture, hunting and gathering. They also practised the art of basket weaving.

The earliest type of shelter was the lean to fashioned of leaves and propped up by a pole.

Trade relations with the neighboring countries influenced the enhancement of the Filipino culture. Our past political village system was of Indian caste. The chinese influenced greatly the economic life of the Filipinos. It appeared that iron, lead, gold and silver were derived by the early Filipinos from the chinese. Aside from the art of mining, the chinese introduced metallurgy and the manufacture of gunpowder, porcelain, pottery, gongs, umbrellas, etc. the Japanese taught the Filipinos how to manufacture agricultural implements, how to breed ducks and fishes for export. Weapons of warfare were manufactured under the direction of the Japanese.

Christianity came to the Philippines from Palestine and Rome, by way of Spain. Christianity - as Mohammedanism, Buddhism, and Hinduism have given us a solid basis for our morals and way of life.
Architecture

Filipino Architecture is not indigenous. It is an admixture of the Muslim, Malayan, chinese and Spanish influences. the indigenous tribes of the Philippines which were quite a diverse group and of nomadic nature had little art of building to speak of. Their architectural art was revealed in their houses of nipa, cogon and bamboo. Although these simple buildings were not as enduring as the colossal pyramids of Egypt nor as magnificent as the grand temple of Greece, yet they were suitable to the tropical conditions of the islands.

Ancient Tagala-Malay Architecture. The Malays brought the concept of simple home building. they build houses of bamboo and wood thatched with grass or palm leaves or nipa, with a pair of steep gables, each gable end terminated with a motif of carabao skull head. The upper part of the gable wall was covered with brilliantly colored woven matting in a decorative manner. The house was raised on wooden posts or stilts about six feet above the ground, and with an open roofless verandah extending on the whole front of the house. the interior was one large room or open hall for all purposes save for a low partitioned cubicle used as the conjugal room of the household. There were little or no window openings because sections of the walls could be projected out when needed or drawn down for security from below the house. there was no need to decorate because their household equipment provided color and ornament such as floor mats, weapons, musical instruments, earthenware, silver and bronze wares and pottery. The Datu's house was larger than those of the other houses in the barangay. The roof consisted of four steep gables projected from a square plan, the hips intersecting at the center in the form of a cross and over this first roof another set of four smaller gables in exact replica of the first. At the apex of each gable was a finial in the form of a crocodile's head. On the ridge was a ridge pole surmounting carabao's skull. The blind wall of the gable was decorated with bamboo matting or splits in intricate design. The interior was made of a big, large hall, at the center of which was the dais where the datu would sit to receive guests during ceremonial rites. Adjoining this hall were the different rooms used for bedroom, dining, service, etc. The main entrance of the Datu's house faced the east with a large open court in front, at the center of which was planted the "tree of life" or totem pole superimposed with the carabao's skull, streamers and garlands. Beyond the house of the datu were the houses of minor chiefs and the nobility and the bachelor's houses for the soldiers serving as barracks. No females were allowed in these houses. The married ones lived in apartment houses.

The community was planned for security and self-sufficiency. Some were fortified and enclosed with palisaded walls, gates, watchtowers and sometimes surrounded with moats. Most of the towers were rectangular in plan with the main axis oriented towards East-West direction obviously influenced from the religious beliefs and respect for the rising and setting sun. At the center of the settlement was the Datu's house and at some distance away were the four granaries located with the corresponding corners of the Datu's house. The ancestral shrine was located facing the west as represented by the setting sun which was also the place reserved for the shrine of the god of death. Fruit trees, herbs, spices and vegetables were cultivated within the settlement, agricultural crops were raised int eh adjoining valleys and hillsides outside the palisaded settlement and work animals and fowls were gathered at night and quartered below each house.

The rich decorative designs called okir were carved on posts, beams, doorways, fascias and others. The most developed phase of the Muslim-filipino decorative art commonly known as "Maranaw art" was executed in bamboo, wood, silver, bronze and other alleys. The "sarimanok" was an important decorative abstract design, the symbolism of which was inherited from our Malays or Tagala as the symbol of the rooster. The colors frequently used in full chromatic scale were the three primaries: red, blue and yellow and the secondaries: purple, green and orange.

The Indonesians who came six thousand years ago introduced the grass-covered house with rounded roofs. This type was originally sunk one meter into the ground, raised later to the ground level, and still later, constructed on stilts. The malay immigrants who came later introduced the squarish type of structure supported by four posts and capped by a pyramidal roof. the sumatran-type of dwellings of wood, provided with steep, graceful roof and decorated with intricate carvings of wood are now found in Lanao, Cotabato and other southern provinces of Mindanao.

Terraces were evident building skill of the Ifugaos. The most extensive of these are three thousand year old Rice Terraces in Banawe, Mountain Priovince. It covers an area of four hundred square kilometers, and it is estimated that the whole terraces can encircle half-way around the world if they are placed end to end, or eight times as long as the Great Wall of China, both considered as among those wonders of the world.

Spanish Influence on Architecture. The Philippines as the "military and ecclesiastical outpost of Spain in the Orient, became the fertile ground for new forms of structures devoted mainly to the spiritual and defensive of the colony. The 335 years of Spanish colonization brought about distinct changes in architecture.
Churches

Since the Spaniards came to the Philippines by conquest, and later to spread Christianity, the first structures which they erected were churches and fortresses. The building of a church marked the beginning of community planning. Wherever a church was erected, the people tried to live within its vicinity. The churches which generally of simplified Baroque, Byzantine or Romanesque style, were built by Spanish friars, who without formal training as architects or engineers, supervised their erection by using pictures of churches from their native country, especially those from the province of Andalucia, Spain. These churches were constructed by Chinese and Filipino workmen under the efficient supervision of the friars. This procedure resulted in huge edifices with he combination of Oriental and Occidental features of Hindu, Chinese, Indo-chinese, Romanesque, Baroque and even Gothic influences. Sometimes, they were decorated with crude and clumsy details of spontaneous and unprecedented character. Built of soft, porous materials, these edifices have through decades absorbed enough moisture and vegetable matter to produce considerably surface vegetation resulting in charming colour and picturesqueness quite alleviating their gross proportion and clumsy details. They formed important feature of the landscape of a town, depicting impressive ecclesiastical monument.

In plan the churches were either rectangular of cruciform with simple nave and aisles, baptistry and belfry. The thick walls were made of adobe and brick interstices mortared with lime, honey and sand. The thick walls were supported by massive buttresses for protection against earthquakes. Between buttresses and the walls were interspersed with small window openings. the facades were embellished with classical details, niches, low reliefs.

Spanish colonial churches were erected in many towns throughout the Philippines. At the clause of the Spanish regime there were 2,778 churches scattered throughout the country, and they present a variety of architectural styles, from Greco-Romano to Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish and Gothic. These churches became foremost patron of architecture, sculpture and painting. They provide logical setting for the development of the art of sculpture and painting, the former for religious statuary and architectural ornamentation, and the latter for murals and decorative ornaments for the ceilings, walls, pendentives and soffit of the domes. Their proportions, scales and details were either modified or adulterated depending on the availability of a design, "maestro de obras" or sculptor assigned to undertake the work.

Significant examples of churches built by the Spanish missionaries are: San Agustin church, considered as the oldest church in Manila (1599-1606 by Bro. Antonio Herrera), the church of Sto. Nino, Cebu, solid Romanesque (1565). The San Agustin church was able to resist the earthquakes of 1645, 1754, 1852, 1863, and 1880. It was the only church that escaped the destructive Pacific War in 1942. Notable churches outside of Manila are the Church of Taal, Batangas by Fr. Marcos Anton; Lipa, Batangas, by Fr. Bonito Varas; Church of Tuguegarao, Cagayan by Fr. Anton Lebato; Church of Baclayon, Bohol, by Fr. Juan de Torres. The old Sto. Domingo Church built in Intramuros by Fr. Diego Soria when destroyed was rebuilt by Filipino architect Felix Roxas. The Manila Cathedral had its beginning from bamboo and nipa construction was the first parish church in Manila in 1571. After its destruction in 1593, 1599 it was replaced by stone edifice in 1610 by Archbishop Diego Vasquez de Mercado. Since then it suffered several destructions caused by earthquakes. The fifth edifice, (the actual cathedral before the Pacific War) was built by architects Luciano Olivar, Vicente Serrano and Eduardo Navarro, and solemnly blessed in 1869. The architecture is a composite of Byzantine and Romanesque. Above its lofty dome is a cross which is the reference of all astronomical altitudes of the Archipelago. The Barasoin Church of Malolos was the scene of promulgation of the Philippine Constitution by President Aguinaldo of the first Philippine Republic on June 23, 1899. This church is of Romanesque style. There are many churches which are of historical importance.
Military Architecture

The early friars proved that they were practical architects and engineers. As a defense against Moro pirates they constructed forts and fortresses. The first fort was constructed by Fr, Antonio Sedeno who arrived in Manila in 1581. He began and planned the construction of the "Real Fuerza de Santiago (Fort Santiago) at the mouth of Pasig River as it was conceived by Legaspi. With the walls of Intramuros, this was completed in 1872. Fort Pilar in Zamboanga was constructed by Fr. Melchor de Veyra. Fr. Francisco Duco built fortresses at Iligan and Misamis. The first stone pier was built in Guiuan, Samar, by Fr. Pedro Monasterio. Early stone bridges were built in Bulacan by Fr. Ignacio Manzanarez in Catarman, Cebu, a sea-wall was built by Fr. Antonio Fuertes.
Irrigation and Water System

The first artesian wells were built in Betis, Pampanga by Fr. Manuel Camanes. The water system in Manila (now MWSS) had its beginning from the water works constructed by Fr. Juan Peguero in 1686. The first irrigation system was constructed in Tanay, Rizal by Fr. Jose Delgado.
Schools

The Spanish missionaries founded and organized schools (nautical and commerce, fine arts, agriculture, trades, home arts, surveying, medicine). The early schools were San Agustin College, Iloilo; San Alberto College, Dagupan, Pangasinan; San Juan de Letran, Manila and Colegio de Sto. Tomas, Manila.
Domestic

In domestic architecture, the mansion type for the well-to-do families was given importance. The first floor was usually of adobe stone while the second floor was of wooden structure with tiled roofs. The main door was the main decorative treatment and was treated with pilasters capped with cornice and pediment. The heavy wooden doors were of two sashes made of heavy timber planks studded with wrought iron or bronze nails, knockers, sockets and heavy cross bars. The street windows of the first floor were elevated from the sill (ventanillas). The open interior court or "patio" was a popular feature of the house plan. The gate entrance hallway was called "zaguan" which led to the patio. Open terraces with balustrades surrounded the patio on the second floor. The upper exterior walls were treated with paneled wood partitions, sliding windows of shell sashes and wood louvres above the sill, sliding "ventanillas" below the sill and protected from without by heavy, wide projecting caves.

Filipino Architects

At the closing years of Spanish regime, some Filipino engineers and architects were in the practice of the profession after they returned from Europe where they studied architecture and engineering. The first Filipino architects were Felix Roxas and Diego Hervas. The early works of the former were the reconstruction of the Sto. Domingo Church, the Church of St. Ignacio and the massive Catholic church of Bacoor, Cavite. He reconstructed the Ayuntamiento (Marble Hall) formerly the Philippine Senate, the palatial residences at San Miguel, Manila for Filipino aristocracy, the Roxas Family, the Paternos, the Valdez', the Aranetas and the Hidalgos. Diego Hervas' works included the St. Paul's Hospital, Assumption Convent, Oriente Building, Monte de Piedad. The later architect was Julio de la Rosa.

Influence of European Building Technique. Steel and concrete construction was introduced in the mid-80s as a result of European and American Influence.

The first steel structures in the Philippines were:
Compania General de la Tabacalera, planned in Spain, and erected in Manila in 1894.
Puente Colgante (now Quezon Bridge), a suspension bridge spanning the Pasig River.
The all-steel Church of San Sebastian, manufactured in Belgium, Gothic in style which was completed in 1891, built by Architect Genaro Palacios.

The introduction of reinforced concrete in the Philippines was in the 1900s and its use in the construction of the Masonic Temple, the first multi-structure in Escolta, Manila.
